Old Masters Gesture Drawing for Modern Comics: The Vital First Step to Any Drawing

Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, Washington
Room 333: Writer Workshops
Friday, March 3, 2023
1:45PM-2:45PM

“Draw ideas, not things; action, not poses; gestures, not anatomical structures." - Walt Stanchfield

Come and learn about the most vital step in the drawing process that many artists miss: the gesture. While there are a lot of important factors the artist must consider when rendering a piece: proportion, anatomy, line, structure, weight, negative space, angles, squash and stretch, perspective (and more!); a lot can be forgiven when you have nailed the essence, or gesture. This lecture will describe the Renaissance tradition of gesture and how these techniques can be applied to modern forms of illustration and art, including comics.

Beginners and seasoned professionals welcome! Come and draw along while we discuss the importance of the gesture.

Jarod is available for one on one classes, as well as group events and workshops.

His teaching focuses on gesture and rhythm, construction, and form, pulling from classical art and modern illustration techniques to help beginner students build the foundations of art.
